# Mandela Barnes Mandela Barnes is a Democratic politician from Wisconsin who served as the state's 45th lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023, making him the first African American to hold that position. He previously served in the Wisconsin State Assembly representing the 11th District from 2013 to 2017. Barnes is running as the Democratic challenger in the 2022 Wisconsin gubernatorial race.
