# Jesse Jackson Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. is a civil rights activist, ordained Baptist minister, and longtime political figure who served as a shadow United States senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997. A protégé of Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement, Jackson became a prominent national leader and advocate for civil rights and LGBTQ rights throughout his career. He is seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat representing Illinois's 2nd Congressional District.
