Biography

Derek Schmidt is a Republican lawyer and U.S. representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district, having assumed office in 2025. He previously served as Kansas Attorney General from 2011 to 2023 and spent a decade in the Kansas State Senate, where he held leadership positions including Senate majority leader and Agriculture Committee chairman. Schmidt was first elected to statewide office in 2010 when he won the attorney general race.
